Extremadura

EXTREMADURA

Pure nature spots

Its big extension and low demographic density lead to a high conservation of this place, as the nature environment keeps virtually intact. La Vera, el Valle del Jerte and la Sierra de Gata and Gredos are good examples for that. By the way, the historic and artistic legacy is huge and varied: from antique prehistoric and pre-roman archaeological sites to the overwhelming cultural influence of Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Jewish. The Guadalupe monastery, a World Heritage Site, Yuste monastery, retirement place and last home of Emperor Carlos V of Germany and I of Spain; and the monastery of Palancar, the tiniest in the world.

The heritage left by multiple cultures and people settled in this region has lead to a wide range of traditional dishes that have made their way to nowadays: the conservation of meat in honey, the garlic soup (the origin of which can be found in Islamic “tarida” or “taria”, or even the medieval caldereta). In resume, the visitor will enjoy a region of great contrasts, with some really varied landscapes, a rich artistic heritage and people living from the resources of a land bathed in the river basins of Tajo and Guadiana.

CULTURE

Here the Holy Week is lived intensely in all the towns. Also, we should highlight the Carnival of Badajoz, the Chanfaina festivity, the pilgrimage of San Isidro, or the livestock fairs.
